Want to start a career in plumbing?
Steps to becoming a plumber:
Reach out to local plumbing companies about job shadow and employment opportunities.
At the age of 16 or older, apply for a Trainee Certificate through the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.
Start working! With Trainee Card in hand, you are ready to get to work under the supervision of a licensed plumber.
Annually complete an Affidavit of Experience. You will then submit it to Labor & Industries via mail or in person.
Complete 8 hours of continuing education each year.
After you have accumulated enough hours (approximately 3 years) you can apply to take your plumbing license exam.
Once you have your trainee card, you are on your way to become a plumber.
To show your value, there are additional steps you can take to grow your skills and show your dedication to the craft.
Acquire and maintain your first aid card.
Purchase a code book and study guide through Builder’s Book, Inc. Their study guide is a valuable tool as you get closer to taking your test.
Reinvest in yourself by accumulating your own tools of the trade.
